Before the new year arrived I went on a reflective walk through some beautiful forest just outside of the Melbourne city. As I walked through the forest I felt this sense of relief as my body reconnected to nature. The sweet smell of eucalyptus and wet earth, the sounds of cockatoos and the crackle of stones beneath my feet. A stillness and peacefulness filled me up, a noticeable contrast to the movement and fullness, that being a mother and running a business creates.
As I walked I felt the sacredness of being alive and a question softly emerged in my mind-heart:
“How can I step into the sacred more frequently in 2017?”
I was recently reminded of this poem by Rilke which spoke to this question of moving towards your own longings… (NB: I am not personally religious but interpret the word G-d as universal intelligence).
God speaks to each of us as he makes us,
then walks with us silently out of the night.
These are the words we dimly hear:
You, sent out beyond your recall,
go to the limits of your longing.
Flare up like a flame
and make big shadows I can move in.
Let everything happen to you: beauty and terror.
Just keep going. No feeling is final.
Don’t let yourself lose me.
Nearby is the country they call life.
You will know it by its seriousness.
Give me your hand.
